Governor Calls for a 3/4 Cent Sales Tax for Education

Yesterday, Governor Bev Perdue called on the General Assembly to restore the three-quarters of the one-cent sales tax that was eliminated during the last legislative session and dedicate those funds to education.
In response, Dr. Olson Huff, Chair of the Board of The North Carolina Partnership for Children, Inc., released the following statement:
“North Carolina is known for investing in its people and recognizing that economic development begins with early childhood development. Our state’s early childhood work has produced enormous education, health, and economic results for the state. We see it in higher third grade reading and math scores, decreased special education placements, and lower dropout rates. We see it as a factor when businesses decide to move here and when magazines name our region as one of the best places to live.
With renewed investment, we can make children, families, communities and economies stronger. This is critical in today’s environment, where there are more children birth to five, more of those children are living in poverty, and far fewer resources are available than a decade ago. Since 1990, there has been an 85% increase in the number of children living in poverty. At the same time, funds have declined— most significantly during the last legislative session when early childhood education taking a disproportionate cut, meaning today far fewer children and communities are benefitting from needed early childhood services.
Any new public resources must be invested wisely. In the words of Dr. Andrew Meltzoff of University of Washington Institute for Learning and Brain Sciences, ‘There are only 2,000 days between the newborn baby and when that child will show up in kindergarten. . . Our children can’t wait.’
Together, we can provide the early education, health and developmental resources parents need to raise capable children and successful adults. In doing so, North Carolina will attract businesses, grow jobs and guarantee prosperity.”

Our 'Delightful Darling' Winners!

| We are proud to announce our top three places for the Central Carolina ‘Delightful Darlings’ fundraiser! Winners are as follows: 1st place, Mason Coldren, son of Patricia and Michael Coldren; 2nd place, Mandi Schlitz, daughter of Annette and Brad Schlitz; and a first time ever tie for 3rd place, Cora Stumpf, daughter of Bianka and Ty Stumpf and Reese Gaines, daughter of Rebecca and Adam Gaines.

The four-week fundraiser earned $3,100, of which 100% will go towards the purchase of books for Lee County children enrolled in the Lee County Imagination Library program. The funds raised will purchase 1,100 books, which will be given free of cost to preschool children in Lee County.
Our 'Delightful Darlings' winners received a trophy, small cash prize and had the opportunity to ride in the Sanford Christmas parade. Mason and Mandi rode in the parade together with their families and had a blast. One of the families created a float for them to ride on together. Everyone had a blast, and they lucked out with a nice warm winter night!

Our first place winner, Mason, and his family put together this wonderful float for all the 'Delightful Darlings' to ride on!

We want to say a BIG THANK YOU to all of our contestants that participated (and their families) and all those that donated to the Delightful Darlings fundraiser. This is the primary fundraiser for Imagination Library. We wouldn't be able to provide books for children in Lee County without the support you all have given! Thank you! |

2010-11 Annual Report Released

| The Lee County Partnership for Children (LCPFC) presented its annual report for the 2010-2011 fiscal year at the Board of Directors meeting on December 1, 2011. The annual report presentation was made by Dr. Pam VanDyk, LCPFC program evaluator, and Mikael Basinger, LCPFC board chair.
The annual report is available online (click here) and at the LCPFC office, 143 Chatham Street. The annual report provides a snapshot of the numerous services supporting young children and families in Lee County and can provide an illustration of the impact services have on their well-being.

Llamas, world records and delightful darlings, OH MY!

| Whew! September and October are busy months here at Lee County Partnership for Children (LCPFC)! We’ve got some awesome events coming up for you and your children to get involved in! Here’s the scoop:
Delightful Darlings
Our Delightful Darlings fundraiser is a great way for families and children to get involved in philanthropy! Families submit a photo of their child under age five that will run in The Sanford Herald in October and Novemeber and help raise monies for the Imagination Library in honor of their child! The three children that receive the most dollars are announced as “Central Carolina’s Delightful Darlings” and receive a cash prize, trophy and get to ride in the local Christmas parades! For an application, click here. Applications are due by October 14. Voting begins on Oct 17.
Delightful Darlings fundraiser is the primary fundraiser for Lee County’s Imagination Library (IL), which is a local early literacy project. IL provides children from birth to age five with a monthly book at no cost to the family. It is available to all children in Lee County. Research shows that the more books a child is exposed to, the better chance that child has at becoming literate. We love to put books in the hands of young children and help increase their chances of success – and you can provide children with books too by helping us with our Delightful Darlings fundraiser! Read for the Record
Whether you are a parent, grandparent of even a child care provider – everyone can get involved with Read for the Record for FREE! On October 6, communities all over the nation will read the same book on the same day to bring awareness to literacy! This year’s book is Llama Llama Red Pajama by Anna Dewdney. LCPFC, Child Care Resource and Referral and Lee County Library are hosting a live reading of Llama Llama Red Pajama with fun games and crafts before and after to celebrate Read for the Record and get as many children read to in Lee County! The event starts at 10:30a.m. We suggest you RSVP to Daphne, 919-774-8144, ext 210 by September 30th, 2011. Here’s your invite!
Are you a child care provider and want to get your classroom or facility involved? Call Shauna, 919-774-9496, and let her know that you would like to participate. LCPFC will provide you with a free copy of Llama Llama Red Pajama and a few fun ideas to enhance the learning experience for your children! All you have to do is pledge with us to read to your children on October 6!

Most of us have heard of kissing a pig, but a llama?! Well, Lee County, we’re bringing a llama in town to give one of our lucky celebrities a big ol’ smackaroo on the lips! Kiss the Llama is in conjunction with Read for the Record – to help raise awareness on the importance of early with Read for the Record. All the proceeds will go to support the Imagination Library!

| What are you doing on October 6? How does breaking a world reading record while raising awareness about America’s achievement gap sound?
Join us as we participate in Jumpstart’s Read for the Record® presented in partnership with Pearson Foundation. Its a national campaign that mobilizes adults and children to close the early education achievement gap by setting a reading world record.
Lee County Partnership for Children and CCR&R will be putting on an awesome skit for the kiddos of Llama, Llama Red Pajama at the Community Arts Building Auditorium, 507 N Steel St. The performance will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Oct 6 and is open to all children! This annual campaign allows Americans to demand that all children receive the quality early education they deserve. On October 6, 2011, more than 2 million voices will call for an end to America’s early education achievement gap by reading Llama Llama Red Pajama by Anna Dewdney – setting a world record in the process!
